Steilacoom, WA Real Estate, Steilacoom Area and Community Information
Steilacoom, Washington, is a prosperous bedroom community with about 6,300 residents. Soldiers and officers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord and their families have often chosen Steilacoom as a place to live.
Although there are different ideas as to how Steilacoom got its rather distinctive name, town officials have asserted that the name is an Anglicized version of the name of a tribe that primarily settled along the shores of Chambers Bay.
A sea captain from Maine named Lafayette Balch is credited with founding the community. When it was incorporated in 1854, it became the very first incorporated town in what was then the Washington territory. Today, Steilacoom is home to the oldest Roman Catholic church in the state. It is also the home of the very first Protestant church to be constructed north of the Columbia River. The community enjoyed early prosperity thanks to lumber exports. Lumber shipments were often destined for San Francisco, where a growing city had a voracious appetite for construction materials.
